Brussel Sprouts - Deformation
Symptoms
Chlorosis starts in young leaves and proceeds to the older ones with ongoing deficiency.
First leaves show chlorosis in the intercostal fields, later on they are uniformly light green or yellow. Often a reddish discoloration is visible.
The leaves are stiff and curled inwards.
Reasons
Sulfur deficiency on leaves
Sulfur deficiency is similar in appearance to nitrogen deficiency, however it begins in younger leaves because sulfur is not as mobile as nitrogen within the plant.
Sulphur deficiency made worse by
- Acidic soils
- Light, sandy soils (leaching)
- Low organic matter
- Poorly aerated soils (waterlogged soils
- ) Areas with low industrial emissions
Sulphur is important for
- Requirement of steady supply in relatively high quantities
- Important for head development and stress tolerance
- Major role in crop quality
- Better inner quality determinants and improved storage quality
