Oilseed foliar nutrition deficiencies are widespread
- 83% of oilseed samples submitted for tissue analysis had a deficiency of Molybdenum, Manganese or Boron.
- 49% of these samples showed multiple deficiencies of two or more of these micronutrients.
- Based on all samples submitted between 2010 and 2016

Listen to the latest advice
But if your OSR crop is thriving, here is some foliar nutrition advice from Yara’s Head of Crop Nutrition Services, Phil Burrell.
See for yourself the effect of micro-nutrients on oilseed
- These oilseed rape plants were grown in sand and watered daily with a nutrient solution without boron, manganese and molybdenum and with just 25% magnesium requirements.
- The pot on the left side was sprayed with 3l/ha YaraVita Brassitrel Pro just before filming started
Don't get caught out - prevention is better than cure
- Apply micronutrients before any visual symptoms of deficiency are seen in the field.
- Prevent micronutrient deficiencies to avoid the risk of yield losses or reduced crop quality.
- Different crops have different requirements so use specific micronutrient mixtures based on a crop's requirements
- YaraVita Brassitrel Pro is designed for brassica crops and contains boron, manganese, molybdenum, magnesium.
All key micro-nutrients

The essential micronutrients for oilseed crops
Can you identify magnesium deficiency in oilseed rape?
Here is a quick reminder of what symptoms of magnesium deficiency can look like in oilseed rape.
- Magnesium deficiency always shows initially on the older leaves first.
- Chlorosis develops between the veins.
- A narrow area on each side of the vein remains green
- Later on, the leaf margins and intercostal chlorotic areas become necrotic.
Do you know the roles of micronutrients in oilseed?
- All micronutrients have crucial roles in plants.
- Some species have a higher requirement for certain micronutrients and so deficiencies of these are more likely.
- A deficiency of any nutrient or micronutrient will result in loss of yield and quality.
Have you seen manganese deficiencies in oilseed rape?
Here is a quick reminder of what symptoms of manganese deficiency looks like in oilseed rape.
- Manganese deficiency occurs on the younger leaves first.
- Chlorosis develops between the veins.
- A narrow area on each side of the vein remains green
- Magnesium deficiency also shows intercostal chlorosis but the symptoms start on older leaves
Can you afford to ignore oilseed micronutrient deficiencies?
- Potential yield losses caused by micronutrient deficiencies can be significant.
- Trials have confirmed yield increases of up to 0.7 T/ha in oilseed rape.
- Cost of application is relatively low compared to the potential losses due to deficiency.
- An autumn application can reduce the susceptibility of oilseed rape to disease and help to increase establishment
- Apply throughout the growing season for peace of mind and to reduce the risk of micronutrient deficiencies.
